Manchester City are weighing up a move for Hearts and Scotland midfielder Keir McMeekin amid interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, as per a new report.
Pep Guardiola witnessed the addition of seven first-team signings to his squad in the recent transfer window, with newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana conducting an audit of the squad that finished third in the Premier League last term and introducing wholesale changes.
Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Ederson, James McAtee and Scott Carson have all left Manchester City in the summer, with the club also sanctioning season-long loans for Manuel Akanji and Jack Grealish to Inter Milan and Everton respectively.
City’s midfield saw the notable additions of Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki as the Blues embark on life without De Bruyne, who was not given a new contract by the board and bid farewell to the Etihad Stadium after 10 illustrious seasons in England before joining Napoli on a two-year contract.
Phil Foden’s return to form in the last month has come at a welcome time for Guardiola and City, who saw their academy graduate struggle with mental and physical issues last term after spearheading his boyhood club to a fourth successive Premier League title in 2024.
Reijnders has also quickly embedded into life at the Etihad Stadium and assumed creative responsibility in midfield, with Cherki nearing full fitness after recovering from a thigh injury sustained by the 22-year-old France international in August.
Manchester City were desperately short of goals and assists coming from midfield last season as De Bruyne and Foden endured difficult seasons for various reasons after the lucrative sale of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for £82 million.
Erling Haaland has been given a new lease of life in front of goal owing partly to the resurgence of Jeremy Doku and Foden in attack of late but Guardiola and officials at the Etihad Stadium will be eyeing further reinforcements in midfield in the transfer windows to follow.
Edinburgh News have reported that Manchester City are locked in a battle with Manchester United, Liverpool and Brighton for the services of Hearts and Scotland midfielder Keir McMeekin following the teenager’s quick rise through the Riccarton academy.
The 15-year-old has received widespread interest and is yet to make a firm decision on his future as outfits across the Premier League vest their interest in the midfield starlet and continue to monitor his progress in Scotland.
Manchester City are one of the interested parties to have made a formal offer to bring McMeekin to the City Football Academy and recently invited the teenager and his family for a tour of the club’s prestigious, state-of-the-art academy facilities.
City have attracted the best youth talent across the globe to Manchester since the club’s Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008, with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak delivering on his promise of developing a world-class academy that produces cutting-edge talent for the first-team and brings huge financial windfalls for the club.
