Matías Viña has been frozen out at River Plate, leaving his 2026 outlook uncertain. Flamengo are now assessing options for the left-back.

O Globo reports that the Brazilian club are seeking a new loan for the Uruguayan, but his salary of almost R$ 1 million is complicating talks. The deal with River is scheduled to run until the end of 2026.

Flamengo sent Viña to River on a one-season loan in January 2026 for a 500,000 dollars fee. The agreement included a 5 million dollars obligation to buy if he played at least 50% of matches.

To avoid triggering that clause, River attempted to return the player mid-season. Flamengo refused unless the contractual penalty was paid, after which River removed him from first-team training.

Flamengo signed Viña from Roma for about R$ 43 million in early 2024 on a deal to 2028. He suffered a serious knee injury in August 2024 that sidelined him for 10 months.

Back fit, he did not earn Filipe Luís’s trust and became third choice at left-back behind Alex Sandro and Ayrton Lucas. He has made 32 appearances for Flamengo, scoring once with two assists, and won the Brasileiro, Copa do Brasil, Libertadores, Supercopa do Brasil and Carioca.
