Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has offered clarity on why Frenkie de Jong will not feature in the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

It is to be noted that the Barcelona midfielder had to leave the pitch early during the recent match against Poland, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The issue, according to Koeman, stems from a minor gluteal injury.

De Jong returned to Barcelona following that game, and Koeman confirmed in his press conference that he would not take part on Sunday.

“He had some discomfort during the match,” Koeman explained, adding that there was no sense in risking the midfielder’s fitness so soon after the setback.

“That’s why we substituted Frenkie. He hadn’t recovered enough to be available for tomorrow’s game. We don’t think it’s too serious, but it was too risky to let him play,” the Dutch coach stated.

While Koeman avoided revealing who could take De Jong’s place in midfield, he admitted that the Barcelona star has become a player opponents always keep an eye on.

His influence on the ball often dictates the rhythm of the Netherlands’ play, something Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski also highlighted after facing him with Poland.

Lewandowski revealed that one of his main instructions during the clash was “to prevent De Jong from carrying the ball.”

That alone shows the value of the midfielder, who continues to be a focal point for both club and country.

Meanwhile, looking ahead to the clash with Lithuania, Koeman said that he expects a similar approach from the opposition. “We have to play from the back as quickly as possible and change sides,” he concluded.

For Barcelona, the news that the injury is not serious will come as a relief.
