The Eagles are unbeaten in their last six Bundesliga meetings with Freiburg, but Sunday’s hosts are currently in fine form.

Looking back

When Eintracht take on SC Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday afternoon, it will be almost exactly five months since the teams’ nail-biter on the final day of the 2024/25 season. Back then, on 17 May, goals from Ansgar Knauff, Rasmus Kristensen and Ellyes Skhiri gave the Eagles a 3-1 win in the Black Forest that secured them third place in the Bundesliga standings and their ticket to the UEFA Champions League.

The man who scored the opening goal that day, Ritsu Doan, is now at Eintracht, having moved to Frankfurt over the summer. The Japanese attacker has five direct goal contributions (two scored, three assists) so far for Dino Toppmöller’s side, all of which have come away from home. Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane (six goal contributions) is the only player in the league with better numbers in away games this season.

Eintracht have had the upper hand in this fixture in recent years, going unbeaten in the last six meetings (three wins, three draws). If the Eagles pick up another victory it will be their third consecutive success against Freiburg, a feat they last achieved between 2004 and 2010.

As things stand

As was the case in May, the teams are rubbing shoulders in the league standings: Frankfurt are currently seventh, while Freiburg are one point and one place further behind in eighth.

Toppmöller’s charges have impressed in the final third so far in 2025/26, finding the net 17 times already in the Bundesliga. Bayern (25) are the only team with more overall, while Eintracht are level with the league leaders for away goals scored (10). However, Frankfurt have also conceded more often (16) than anyone else this term.

“We’re creating a lot of chances and scoring a lot of goals,” said sporting director Timmo Hardung. “We’ve got great aggression going forward. If we can reach the same level at the back then we’ll make it really tough for any opponent to score against us. We can’t keep a clean sheet in every game but what we can do is make sure every opponent has to work incredibly hard to score against us.” Freiburg in form Freiburg are currently in fine fettle and on a run of six competitive games without defeat. “It’s up to us to get ourselves in the right condition and position, as a team and as a group, to increase our chances of being able to win a match,” said Hardung.

The Eagles want to put that into practice on Sunday 19 October in Freiburg (kick-off 15:30 CEST). The team will begin their preparations for the game on Wednesday.
