Reliable German footballing media sources are currently reporting that RB Leipzig are closing in on their second major signing the January transfer window. After completing the blockbuster purchase of Reims centre-back Abdoul Koné, the German RB outfit is set to pick up Dutch attacker Ayodele Thomas from PSV Eindhoven. Sky Germany and Kicker claim a medical for the 18-year-old is set up for this weekend.

RB Leipzig have stuck with prospect signings this January

Koné will not be joining the German Red Bulls until after the season concludes. Leipzig’s other signing of the ongoing transfer window, Nigerian winger Suleiman Sani, is also considered a long term prospect. The 19-year-old – in part due to injury – will not be making his Bundesliga debut anytime soon.

Originally, Leipzig also planned to pick up Thomas on a free transfer after the season. German sources report that the RB front office changed their mind in this regard and opted to work out a €400,000 purchase. Eindhoven have secured a re-sale clause as part of the deal.

Thomas remains a prospective signing despite the fact that the teenager has scored three goals and contributed six assists in 18 Eredivisie appearances this season. Leipzig remain content with the current team’s performance pace that should secure Champions League football this season.

Sporting director Marcel Schäfer and the RB administrative team continue to seek to build for the future.
