Barcelona are on the verge of officially announcing Andreas Christensen’s contract renewal, with the Danish defender set to remain at the club for the next two seasons.

The agreement fulfils a promise made by incoming president Joan Laporta, who publicly committed to offering the 30-year-old a new deal after the serious injury that kept him sidelined for most of last season.

Initially, it was believed that the former Chelsea ace might only be handed a one-year extension, but Barça have proceeded to renew him for two years until 2028, despite ongoing concerns over the defender’s fitness.

Now, according to SPORT, from Barcelona’s perspective, the decision to offer a two-year renewal represents a move that makes sense both sporting and financially.

Sporting department fully behind the decision

Christensen’s renewal has been approved across Barcelona’s sporting department. Deco and, in particular, Hansi Flick both believe the 30-year-old remains an important squad player after accepting the club’s revised financial conditions.

For Flick, Christensen offers valuable versatility. The Dane is capable of playing both as a central defender and as a defensive midfielder when required.

The German coach also highly values his technical quality, positional intelligence, and composure in possession.

The financial benefits

The economic aspect of the agreement has been just as important as the sporting one. Christensen has accepted a dramatic reduction to his fixed salary, with a significant portion of his earnings now tied to individual performance-related bonuses.

Unlike some previous contract restructures, this pay cut will directly impact Barcelona’s salary limit because it comes alongside a contract extension.

That reduction creates additional room within the wage bill, helping the club register new signings and comply with La Liga’s financial regulations ahead of next season.

Negotiations were not straightforward, but Christensen ultimately chose to remain at Barcelona despite receiving more lucrative offers from lower-table Premier League clubs.

Why the contract lasts two years

The length of the agreement is another strategic element of the deal. At 30 years old, Christensen is still considered capable of performing at a high level for several more seasons if he can stay fit.

Extending his contract by two years instead of allowing it to expire next summer gives Barcelona greater flexibility.

Should Christensen perform well during the coming season but the club later decide to move in a different direction, they would still be able to negotiate a transfer rather than lose him on a free.

A sale next summer would not only recover the wages paid during the season but could also generate a small profit, something that would have been impossible had his contract been allowed to run down.

If circumstances change and the right opportunity arises in future transfer windows, both Barcelona and the player would be in a stronger position to negotiate thanks to the new contract.

For now, though, Barcelona believe they have secured an experienced, versatile defender on much-improved financial terms while also protecting the club’s long-term interests.
