Romário has bristled at comparisons between his 1995 Flamengo arrival and the possible return of Lucas Paquetá, saying the contexts are entirely different.
According to Coluna Do Fla, West Ham initially asked 60 million euros for Paquetá, a figure now at 45 million euros, and the clubs will meet on Friday 16, when Flamengo are expected to present an official offer.
"There is nothing comparable to his situation as a player and mine, from 1995 to now. We have to stop making absurd comparisons. This is one of them," said Romário, speaking at an event on his Romário TV platform.
"He will be another player repatriated to Flamengo. If Flamengo are interested, it is because he will help. He is another player who made a beautiful history and will return to his former club. I hope he can be happy."
The former striker joined Flamengo after being named the best player in the world and winning the 1994 World Cup, a move many fans still regard as the club’s most spectacular signing.
He scored 204 goals in 240 matches between 1995 and 1999, becoming the club’s fifth-highest scorer, and lifted the Copa Mercosul in 1999 and the Campeonato Carioca in 1996 and 1999.
