Sunderland opened pre-season with a 5-1 win at York City, yet Régis Le Bris still has major selection and transfer decisions before Ipswich Town. Sunderland Echo highlights that eight big questions remain across tactics, recruitment and player futures.

The result was secondary to rhythm, with the United States tour set to shape his strongest side ahead of a Europa League campaign.

Chris Rigg’s best role is a live debate after he scored and looked stronger in central areas. A number eight position could suit his ball-carrying and late runs, though Le Bris must judge whether to trust him there defensively or keep using his versatility.

At centre-back, Dan Ballard is expected to rejoin during the American tour after ankle surgery. Omar Alderete impressed last season and Nordi Mukiele offers flexibility, so while Ballard and Alderete look a natural pairing, any new signing could complicate matters.

Right-back is another call. Trai Hume is dependable, Mukiele can excel either centrally or wide, and Thomas Meunier adds cover after Sunderland chose not to trigger a near £20 million option for Lutsharel Geertruida.

Aji Alese’s return was a lift and his ability to cover centre-back and left-back could be valuable if he stays fit. Jenson Seelt’s ceiling is high but he may seek regular minutes, while Leo Hjelde offers left-sided depth and homegrown status amid fitness checks.

Romaine Mundle must prove durability after two hamstring setbacks, with Nilson Angulo and Chemsdine Talbi strong competition.

Anthony Patterson’s exit still feels likeliest, with interest yet to match Sunderland’s valuation as he trains at the Academy of Light. Robin Roefs remains first choice with Melker Ellborg backing up, while calls are also needed on Alan Browne, Arthur Masuaku and Simon Adingra to manage squad size and European registration.

Timur Tutierov and Trey Ogunsuyi could stay for cup and European chances or depart on loan. Their paths are blocked by senior options such as Talbi, Mundle, Nilson Angulo, Wilson Isidor and Brian Brobbey.
