Benfica have decided to pursue a renewal for João Rego after talks with PAOK, with the Portugal under-21 midfielder expected to stay at the club. All indications are that he is close to signing fresh terms.
O Jogo reports that the player’s proximity to a move to the Thessaloniki club helped speed up the process, and that Mário Branco, Benfica’s general director, has taken charge of the case.
Rego’s current deal runs to summer 2028, and the aim is to extend it by at least two more years to the end of 2029/30. It could be the third recent renewal at Seixal, after two others were tied up through to 2031.
With a new contract in mind, Rego is set to remain in José Mourinho’s squad. He will, however, need to work hard to earn his place amid competition from Georgiy Sudakov and Rafa Silva.
This season he has made 19 appearances for Benfica, eight in Liga Portugal Betclic, five in Liga Portugal Meu Super, three in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Champions League and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 573 minutes he has scored one goal, and he is valued at 3 million euros.
