João Rego’s proposed switch to PAOK is off, although a Benfica exit has not been entirely ruled out. Greece had looked a likely destination until a few hours ago, with the window there open until Friday, six February.
Record reports that PAOK are set to announce the signing of Jorge Sánchez from Cruz Azul. That move would almost complete their squad for the rest of the season, so Rego is no longer a priority.
The 20-year-old’s future therefore remains open, after he came close to joining Famalicão. His contract renewal with Benfica is near completion, but he has seen limited space in José Mourinho’s plans.
He has started only a few matches, including against Chaves and Atlético in the Taça de Portugal. With Rafa Silva and Sidny Cabral arriving during this window, his opportunities have narrowed further.
Rego, valued at 3 million euros, has made 19 competitive appearances this season for Benfica, eight in the Liga Portugal Betclic, five in the Liga Portugal Meu Super, three in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Champions League and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 573 minutes, he has scored one goal.
