According to Sunderland Echo, Spurs are seeking to appoint former Brighton and Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi before their visit to Sunderland on 12 April, with the club sitting one point above the relegation zone.
Confirmation of interim head coach Igor Tudor’s departure arrived on Sunday after a six-week spell without a competitive win.
De Zerbi is understood to be their leading candidate. The timing is complicated by his original preference on when to start, though Spurs are said to have made a major push for him to take over immediately and he is considering the move.
Assistant Bruno Saltor is currently overseeing training while many players are on international duty. The intention is to have a new head coach in place when the squad reconvenes later this week, giving a full week of preparation. Sean Dyche has also been linked if De Zerbi declines.
Tudor’s exit was mutually agreed, with staff members Tomislav Rogic and Riccardo Ragnacci also leaving. The club thanked them for their efforts, acknowledged Tudor’s recent bereavement and said an update on a new head coach would follow.
Spurs hope the break brings key returns. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is undergoing hernia surgery and could still face Sunderland, otherwise Antonín Kinský would step in. Mathys Tel is a minor doubt after a knock against Nottingham Forest.
Mohammed Kudus and Rodrigo Bentancur are edging towards full training and could add depth, though starts are uncertain. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski may feature before season’s end but are unlikely for Sunderland. Ben Davies could return, while Wilson Odobert is out and Yves Bissouma is a doubt.
