There is reportedly a good chance Marc Guehi will leave Crystal Palace in the January transfer window after his move to Liverpool fell through on deadline day.
The defender was all set to join the Reds after the two clubs came to an agreement on a deal worth £35 million, but Palace’s failure to sign a suitable replacement saw it called off late in the day.
With Guehi unlikely to sign a contract extension, he could leave Selhurst Park on a free transfer next summer when his current deal expires.
However, Sky Sports News claim that the 25-year-old is “equally likely to leave in January as he is to depart as a free agent next summer”.
Palace “realistically accept” Guehi will leave the club one way or the other, acknowledging that it will be “difficult” to convince him to commit his future to the Eagles.
A fresh approach from Liverpool “cannot be ruled out”, particularly after new signing Giovanni Leoni suffered a torn cruciate ligament on his debut for the Merseyside outfit.
The injury leaves Arne Slot light on central defensive options, with only Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahim Konate and Joe Gomez currently available.
However, Palace would not allow their captain to “leave on the cheap” in the winter window.
Guehi can reach a pre-contract agreement with clubs abroad from January onwards. A number of clubs in Europe are reportedly considering a move for the England international, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.
Liverpool travel to south London to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League this Saturday.
