According to Globo.com, Adonis Frías’s move to Atlas-MEX is expected to prompt a shift at Santos. Willian Arão, used as a makeshift centre-back in both matches last week, could now see more minutes in defence.
Arão won the 2020 Brazilian title with Flamengo as a centre-back under Rogério Ceni. He joined Santos as a midfielder, but partnered Luan Peres against Macará-EQU and Vasco in a solution devised by Cuca.
Arão also scored his first two goals for Santos while operating at centre-back.
With a transfer ban in place and no reinforcements available, Cuca has limited options and is leaning on squad versatility.
For the decisive meeting with Macará on Thursday at 19:00 Brasília time in Ecuador, the coach has Arão, Luan Peres and youngsters João Ananias and João Alencar available.
The staff are awaiting the return of Lucas Veríssimo for Sunday’s Brasileirão game against Mirassol at 18:30 at Vila Belmiro. He is in the final stage of physical transition after a left calf muscle injury and has not featured since the goalless draw with Remo on the first of August.
