Atlético leapfrog Real Madrid with derby win | OneFootball

Atlético Madrid came out on top in a fiery Madrid derby, beating Real Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano to leapfrog their neighbours into second place in La Liga.

The opening half was short on clear chances but certainly not short on tension, with both sides involved in a number of heavy challenges.

Thibaut Courtois was eventually called into action to deal with a dangerous Lee Kang-in delivery, but the match remained goalless at the interval.

The game changed shortly after the restart when Dean Huijsen brought down Giuliano Simeone just outside the box. After a VAR review, the former Bournemouth defender was shown a red card, and Alejandro Grimaldo kept his composure from the penalty spot to give Atlético the lead.

The hosts quickly made their numerical advantage count again. Simeone burst forward and sent a low ball across the area, allowing Jonathan David to slide in and make it 2-0. It was the Canadian's third goal in as many La Liga appearances.

Real Madrid refused to go quietly, with Antonio Rüdiger heading in Bernardo Silva's free-kick late on to set up a tense finish.

Atlético held firm, however, securing a valuable derby victory and moving one point above Real, who have now suffered two defeats this season.

The result leaves Madrid six points behind unbeaten leaders Barcelona.
