Cesar Peixoto is set to be unveiled as Wolves’ new head coach after Rob Edwards was sacked on Thursday morning.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 46-year-old visited the Compton training ground yesterday to sign his deal ahead of taking charge at the Championship club. He will leave Gil Vicente after 16 months, having guided them to sixth in Portugal’s top flight last season.

Social media leaks on Wednesday evening revealed a verbal agreement between Wolves and Peixoto while Edwards remained in post. It is understood Edwards, abroad on holiday, first learned of the development from family members.

A phone call on Thursday morning then confirmed his dismissal, and it is understood some senior staff were unaware of the planned change.

Fosun chairman and co-founder Guo Guangchang, together with Wolves chairman Nathan Shi, worked with agent Jorge Mendes and his Gestifute agency to seal the deal for Peixoto.

Benfica had also shown interest before appointing former Fulham boss Marco Silva.

Peixoto is known for front foot, attacking football, which is believed to have appealed to Wolves. Shi hinted at a shift in style and philosophy in the club’s announcement of Edwards’ exit.
