Cesar Peixoto is set to be unveiled as Wolves’ new head coach after travelling to the club’s Compton training ground to sign his deal.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 46-year-old arrived in the country yesterday to finalise the move to the Championship club and succeed Rob Edwards.

The Portuguese will depart Gil Vicente after 16 months in charge, having guided them to sixth in the top flight last season.

News of Wolves’ verbal agreement with Peixoto leaked on social media on Wednesday evening while Edwards was still in post. It is understood he learned of it from family while on holiday abroad, and had been using the break to plan transfer business.

A Thursday morning phone call informed Edwards of the decision, and some senior members of staff were unaware a change was imminent.

Fosun chairman and co-founder Guo Guangchang and Wolves chairman Nathan Shi worked with Jorge Mendes and Gestifute to secure Peixoto. Mendes later presented the client to Wolves, with Benfica having shown interest before appointing former Fulham boss Marco Silva.

Peixoto favours front-foot, attacking football, which is believed to have appealed to the club, and Shi has hinted at a shift in style.
