Cesar Peixoto is poised to be unveiled as Wolves’ head coach after travelling to the Compton training ground to sign his deal. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 46-year-old will succeed Rob Edwards, who was sacked.

Peixoto will leave Gil Vicente after 16 months in charge, having guided the Portuguese side to sixth in the top flight last season. He is set to take charge at the Championship club.

A verbal agreement emerged on social media on Wednesday evening while Edwards remained in post. It is understood he learned of developments from family members while on holiday abroad, even as he planned Wolves’ next move in the transfer window.

A phone call on Thursday morning then confirmed his dismissal. It is also understood some senior staff were unaware of the impending change.

Fosun chairman and co-founder Guo Guangchang and Wolves chairman Nathan Shi collaborated with agent Jorge Mendes and Gestifute to finalise Peixoto’s move. Benfica were interested too before turning to former Fulham boss Marco Silva.

Mendes presented Peixoto, a Gestifute client, to Wolves as the club advanced plans for a new boss. The coach is associated with front-foot, attacking football, which is believed to have appealed, and Shi hinted at a shift in style in the announcement of Edwards’ sacking.
