Chelsea have reopened their pursuit of AC Milan shotstopper Mike Maignan, according to Sky Sports.
Milan rejected two bids from Chelsea for Maignan last summer, deeming them below their valuation, which is closer to €23 million.
Given Maignan’s contract expires in 2026, Chelsea considered their offers fair and decided to withdraw their interest at the time.
Fast forward a few months, and Maignan is no closer to extending his stay at the San Siro, putting interested parties on alert.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will attempt to sign Maignan in January or wait till next summer when he will become a free agent.
Either way, the Blues will need to create a vacancy in their current goalkeeping department to aid Maignan’s arrival, and Filip Jorgensen is likely to make way as he seeks more playing minutes.
Preparing for the impending departure of Maignan, AC Milan are admirers of Cagliari’s Elia Caprile but will need to fend off interest from city rivals Inter Milan.
For now, though, the Rossoneri will continue to count on Maignan as they look to end a four-year wait for league glory.
Milan’s 1-0 victory over Inter in Sunday’s derby, during which Maignan saved a penalty, saw them move up to second in the Serie A table, two points behind Roma.
Similarly, Chelsea are second in the Premier League and are more than happy with current number one Robert Sanchez, who won the best goalkeeper award in July’s Club World Cup and has kept the joint second-most clean sheets in the Premier League alongside Dean Henderson (six).
Both men are one shy of Arsenal’s David Raya in the race for the Golden Glove.
