Corinthians are taking no risks as they monitor Hugo Souza’s knee pain ahead of Sunday’s derby with Santos at Neo Química Arena, in the 25th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. According to Globo.com, the issue is not considered serious but the club want to avoid a longer absence.
He will be re-assessed at CT Joaquim Grava on Wednesday and tracked by medical staff through to the 16:00 Brasília time kick-off. The expectation is that he will be available to Fernando Diniz.
If discomfort persists he could be rested again, as in the last match against Coritiba. The problem arose during Saturday’s training when he saved a ball with the tip of his foot and felt pain in the medial collateral ligament, so staff kept him out in Curitiba.
The club’s priority is to have most of the squad available for September’s Conmebol Libertadores quarter-final ties with Estudiantes of Argentina. With that in mind, key players will be rotated when required, and on Sunday Hugo Souza, Matheuzinho and Matheus Bidu were all spared.
Diniz also has Kauê and Felipe Longo as goalkeeping options. Against Coritiba he selected Kauê.
