Emile Heskey says he is surprised Leicester City have not turned to Jamie Vardy this summer, with the 39-year-old still assessing options.
"I don't know why they haven't even gone back and got him, to be honest with you. I'll take him back in a heartbeat," he told GOAL.
"The reality is, since he left, we haven't had a forward anywhere near that level. He didn't even have a team for a while when we were still playing. I know it's a different remit."
"It's about bringing kids through. We've got some fantastic young kids, Will Alves being one of them."
"Players like that who came through the academy, or came through the under-18s, we've got more to come. It's about building like that again. We moved away from that, and now we need that model back again."
Vardy left Cremonese earlier in the summer after one season that brought seven goals, and remains without a club.
Sao Paulo have reportedly offered a short-term deal, while there is interest in England, with West Ham linked last month and Sheffield Wednesday chairman David Storch stating he would like to bring him back to his boyhood club.
Leicester have signed Admir Bristric and Liam Cullen to strengthen up front, but there have been calls for another arrival before the window closes on 1 September.
Vardy has previously ruled out a Leicester return, describing that chapter as over, and plans to continue supporting and following the club.
