Erick Pulgar has signed a new Flamengo contract to 2029 after turning down lucrative offers from the Middle East.

GE reports Shabab Al-Ahli and Al-Jazira made proposals with salaries beyond what Flamengo could approach, underlining the Chilean’s choice.

Sporting director José Boto added an extra year to the offer, taking it to 2029, to help bridge the gap. The new release clause is 10 million dollars, about R$ 50 million.

The renewal was made official on Wednesday. After signing, Pulgar highlighted his family’s wishes, daily work and the supporters’ affection as key reasons for staying.

He joined in August 2022 and debuted on 28 August in a 1-0 win over Botafogo in round 24 of the Brasileirão. He has played 173 games for the Rio club.

Across that spell he has 108 wins, 39 draws and 26 defeats, plus six goals and nine assists. The 32-year-old has 54 caps and four goals for Chile, winning the 2016 Copa América.

Pulgar’s previous deal ran to the end of 2027 after a renewal in March 2025. With interest growing abroad and the clause dropping to an accessible level, Flamengo moved to update terms.

He took a thigh knock against Mirassol but has recovered and is available on Sunday 6 for the trip to Remo in round 26, 16:00 Brasília, at Mangueirão.
