Mexico City authorities have raised the death toll to four after celebrations of Mexico’s 2026 World Cup win over Ecuador, with inquiries under way into what caused three asphyxia deaths. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the fatalities occurred during gatherings across the capital.

Health secretary Nadine Gasman said three victims, a 44-year-old man and two women aged 19 and 48, died from asphyxia. A fourth person died in hospital following cardiorespiratory arrest.

The fourth case involved a man of about 30, whose identity remains unknown, taken to hospital after status epilepticus, a convulsive seizure and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Two of the dead were from Mexico City and one from the State of Mexico, while the fourth has not been identified.

Head of government Clara Brugada said the city prosecutor’s office is investigating how the deaths happened and what triggered the asphyxia. She discounted any link to alcohol consumption.

Brugada said authorities are working to establish the mechanics of the asphyxia, and ordered the immediate strengthening of civil protection, health and security protocols for Mexico’s next match on Sunday, when another large crowd is expected.

She added that case files have been opened and urged that the inquiries run their full course to determine responsibility.

Official figures put crowds at about 1.4 million across the capital, with more than 35,000 public servants deployed.

Around 484,000 gathered on Paseo de la Reforma, Avenida Juárez and at the Monumento a la Revolución, and about 95,000 near the Estadio Ciudad de México.
