Flamengo’s new signings Joaquín Freitas and Anthony Valencia were unveiled to the Maracanã crowd before Wednesday’s match, then watched a 2-0 win over Mirassol. The pair stepped onto the pitch pre-game and were captivated by the occasion.

“It was madness, truly. A beautiful stadium, with a very beautiful crowd. Everything was very beautiful,” said Joaquín Freitas. Anthony Valencia added: “A very mythical stadium and I hope to play soon and feel the love of the crowd.” They told FlamengoTV, the club’s official channel.

Freitas, 19, joins from River Plate in Argentina, with Flamengo investing seven million dollars, approximately R$ 36 million. The forward will wear 30 and compete with Pedro for minutes.

Valencia, 23, arrives from Royal Antwerp in Belgium for five million euros, R$ 30 million, and takes the 14 shirt. He was initially signed to replace Gonzalo Plata, who was set to join Dynamo Moscow, but that move collapsed, so the two Ecuadorians will now play together as they did at the last World Cup.

Both names appeared in the CBF’s Boletim Informativo Diário on Wednesday, meaning they are eligible for the next Brasileirão round. The Argentine forward and the Ecuadorian winger are expected to be in the squad on Sunday 06 against Remo, in the 26th round, with kick-off at 16:00 Brasília time at Estádio Mangueirão in Belém do Pará.
