Lazio defender Samuel Gigot will reportedly be given the opportunity to redeem himself under Gennaro Gattuso following a miserable campaign.
The Avignon native joined the Biancocelesti in the summer of 2024. In his first season in the Italian capital, he was a regular feature under Marco Baroni, although Alessio Romagnoli and Mario Gila were ahead of him in the pecking order.
This season, the 32-year-old’s campaign was completely wrecked by an ankle injury that required surgical intervention. Therefore, he didn’t make a single appearance under Maurizio Sarri.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Gattuso would be happy to rely on Gigot, should the latter return to fitness. The Italian manager has been fond of the centre-back from his time at Olympique Marseille between 2023 and 2024, when he appointed the latter as the stand-in captain in the absence of Valentin Rongier.
With Romagnoli on the verge of joining Al-Sadd, and Mario Gila potentially heading to Napoli or Atalanta, Lazio will be left short at the back. Oliver Provstgaard should be promoted to a starting role, and a new defender will be bought. Nevertheless, Gattuso would certainly cherish the presence of an old ally who can bring depth and experience to the department.
Gigot, like many other Lazio players, is running on a contract expiring in June 2027, so this could be his final campaign at Formello.
