Gonzalo Plata’s proposed move from Flamengo to Dynamo Moscow collapsed on Tuesday after the Ecuador winger failed his medical, hours after club president Luiz Eduardo Baptista had celebrated the pending sale during an administrative council meeting.

According to GE, Baptista told councillors he was very happy about selling Plata because it would spare the club from monitoring his nightlife and drinking.

The cancellation means Flamengo must now manage Plata’s return to the squad, despite signing Anthony Valencia from Royal Antwerp as his replacement. The club were taken aback by the failed medical, since Plata had been playing regularly and started for Ecuador at the 2026 World Cup.

The agreement with Dynamo envisaged 12 million euros paid upfront, around R$ 72 million at current rates. With the Russian side withdrawing, Flamengo will not receive that sum.

Over two years at Flamengo, Plata has been regarded as tactically important by Filipe Luís and Leonardo Jardim, notably for his defensive work on the right. At times the club overlooked nightlife excesses because of his application on the pitch.

In March, Jardim publicly urged him to integrate better, stressing the need for focus, attitude and physical commitment to play for Flamengo. With Plata back, Jardim has extra options on the right flank.
