Grêmio are under growing pressure to replace Luís Castro as results stall near the relegation zone, but dismissing him could carry a heavy financial hit.

According to Gremistas.net, Castro's deal runs to December 2027 without a specific release clause, so termination would trigger payment of remaining wages. With the staff earning about R$ 1.9 million per month, the bill is estimated at roughly R$ 32.3 million.

After the 3-0 defeat to Atlético-MG in round 23 of the Brasileirão, football chief Paulo Pelaipe said the club will keep Castro and expressed certainty that results will arrive by year end, citing the coach's dedication and daily work at the training ground.

Pelaipe also argued that president Odorico Roman took charge amid serious financial strain attributed to Alberto Guerra's tenure, saying Grêmio had to part with Arthur and assemble a squad during the competition while keeping salaries current.

Castro, announced on 12 December, has 19 wins, 13 draws and 14 defeats in 46 games, a 50.7% return, despite winning the Campeonato Gaúcho. His team exited the Copa Sudamericana play-offs to Bolívar and have won only two of eight matches since the calendar resumed after the World Cup, sitting two points above the drop zone.

Away form has been a major issue. Grêmio have not won on the road in the league, with four draws and seven losses, the third-worst away record, ahead only of Chapecoense and Vitória.
