Grêmio sell Gabriel Mec to FC Porto for €11m as Portugal pipeline grows | OneFootball

Gabriel Mec, 18, has joined FC Porto, the current Portuguese champions, after weeks of uncertainty over a new Grêmio deal or a move to Europe. The attacking midfielder was announced on Wednesday 2.

According to Gremistas.net, the deal is worth €11 million, about R$ 65 million at current rates. As Grêmio owned 80% of his economic rights, the club will receive roughly R$ 52 million and keep 12% of any future capital gain on a subsequent sale.

Mec’s exit continues a steady flow of Grêmio talent to Portugal over the past decade. In total, six players have moved from the club to Portuguese sides in that period.

The first was goalkeeper Léo Jardim, an academy product now at Vasco da Gama. After winning the 2016 Copa do Brasil, he joined Rio Ave on loan, then was sold for €1 million, around R$ 4.5 million at the time.

In August 2020, Everton Cebolinha left for Benfica in a €20 million move, worth R$ 127.6 million at the then exchange rate. That transfer became the second largest sale in the club’s history.
