Harrison Jones has thanked Sunderland after sealing a move to Peterborough United. The 21-year-old midfielder has signed a three-year contract, ending a spell that began at six and included seven senior outings.
Sunderland Echo understands that he has left on a free transfer, with a sell-on clause protecting Sunderland. On Instagram Jones said he was delighted to join Posh, called them a big club, could not wait to get started, and thanked Sunderland for 15 years that shaped him as a player and person.
The post drew warm replies from former team-mates. Luke O’Nien wished him all the best, Chris Rigg and Trai Hume offered good-luck messages, and Dan Neil responded with a red heart emoji.
The switch offers a route to regular senior football after a season split between Sunderland’s first team and under-21s. He was named on the bench for several Premier League fixtures in 2026, including against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
Jones said the move came together quickly and that leaving Wearside was a difficult call, but the right time to go and play. He described himself as a versatile midfielder comfortable in different roles and stressed the importance of completing the deal before pre-season.
His exit comes amid a wider refresh of the Academy of Light under Florent Ghisolfi. Sunderland have moved to protect value on young players, triggering extensions for Zak Johnson and Timur Tutierov, appointing John Hewitson as academy manager, and with Graeme Murty set to depart as under-21s lead coach.
