Cameron Archer netted his first goal for AJ Auxerre on Friday, marking a standout performance on his debut.

Archer joined the Ligue 1 side on deadline day, completing a season-long loan from Southampton without an option to buy.

The 24-year-old accumulated just under 1000 league minutes last season in the Championship, with many of his appearances (19) coming from the bench. He likely viewed a loan move to France as a fresh start in a new environment.

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert revealed to the Daily Echo: “We came to the decision that it’s best for Cam to get regular minutes and make the experience to play abroad, then we’ll see next season.”

It didn’t take long for the Southampton loanee to have an impact on his first Auxerre start, as he believed he opened the scoring 21 minutes in. However, after a swift VAR check, it was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

Olympique Lyon took the lead just seven minutes later, before doubling the deficit against Auxerre in the 31st minute. Archer consistently remained on the last line of defence for the French outfit, eventually being met with an incisive pass, instinctively taking it past a defender and slotting in his first goal of the campaign before half-time.

While he missed one big chance, the Jamaican forward looked promising and energetic in each phase, engaging both defensively (five recoveries alongside attempting eight duels) and offering a threat in behind.

Auxerre’s current manager is former Southampton head coach Will Still, who was impressed with Archer’s debut given his short preparation.

“Cameron only had a session and a half to adapt. Hats off to him. We know the attacking quality we have, but we can’t afford to be nice.”

According to Eckert, “Will Still asked very early on, when he became manager of Auxerre, if there is a chance to get Cam to France, and it was an option Cam wanted to pursue.”

Saints summer signing Lewis Dobbin offers a similar profile to Archer, whilst also possessing the playmaking ability to operate in and around the number nine. As someone who can fill in centrally and out wide, his ability to occupy space between the lines naturally makes him a more appealing option.

Given that Dobbin has been signed permanently on a reported £9 million fee – alongside the loan addition of striker Divin Mubama – it limited the guaranteed opportunities for Archer to feature this season.

If Archer can build on this performance and establish himself as a consistent starter for Auxerre, his spell in Ligue 1 could prove valuable for both the forward and Southampton ahead of next season.
