Hoeneß on Bayern’s economic strength: „The club is a fortress“

According to Uli Hoeneß, FC Bayern is more financially stable than it has been for years. In the OMR podcast, the honorary president talks openly about the financial state of the German record champions, explains development potential – and at the same time warns which construction sites the club cannot solve itself in the German soccer environment.

It’s not just in sporting terms that things have been going really well at FC Bayern this season; the Bavarians are also back on course for economic success. Uli Hoeneß seems satisfied, almost relaxed, when he describes FC Bayern’s current financial situation. After some challenging years, the club is „a fortress again“, he says. The recently presented financial figures confirm this: turnover is scratching the billion mark and the gap to the national competition is greater than ever. For Hoeneß, this is no coincidence, but the result of fundamental stability throughout the club.

„The figures are good. The club really is a fortress again at the moment. Everything is actually right at the moment. The figures are good. We have a very ambitious team, we have an outstanding coach and the external image is also as it should be at the moment,“ he emphasizes in the OMR podcast.

Hoeneß is also relaxed about the often-discussed fixed deposit account. Although the amount has shrunk recently, he sees the causes primarily in a transfer phase that, in his view, did not go optimally. Nevertheless, the club has already reversed this trend: „But it’s in the process of growing again,“ explains Hoeneß – referring to a transfer period in which FC Bayern „spent almost no money“.

Where the next growth will come from – and why the Bundesliga is slowing down

In an interview with Philipp Westermeyer, Hoeneß also analyzes the question of where new growth can be generated for FC Bayern. His answer is clear: primarily in the international arena. The club is „one of the best advertising media for the industry in Europe“, and he sees considerable potential in merchandising and the global online business in particular.

However, Hoeneß sees the biggest obstacle outside the Bayern cosmos – in the Bundesliga and the DFL. The TV revenue compared to the Premier League is a structural problem for him: „In England, the team at the bottom of the table gets 50 million more than FC Bayern as German champions – and that’s a disaster.“

The Bundesliga must become more attractive internationally again, otherwise there is a risk of long-term distortion of competition. Hoeneß emphasizes that he is striving for a fairer and at the same time more profitable distribution of TV revenue: „If there is significantly more money, then it must be distributed proportionally.“

Why money is important for Bayern – but never everything

Despite all the economic analysis, Hoeneß remains true to his basic attitude: money is only a means to an end. His focus is always on the sporting core, on identity and performance. He is particularly proud of the fact that FC Bayern remains competitive in Europe despite financially superior opponents: „We have shown that you can show absolute world-class soccer even with the resources you can generate in Germany.“
