José Juan Romero will face CD Castellón again more than a decade on, this time as AD Ceuta FC coach in professional football, with the sides meeting on Saturday at 14.00.
In 2015 he was the little-known boss of Gerena in Tercera, whose bold, possession-based side met Castellón in the Copa Federación. El Periódico Mediterráneo notes that Calderé’s Castellón went through after a tight tie.
Once nicknamed the “Guardiola de Gerena” for his positional play, clean build-up and attacking intent, Romero is now among Spain’s most respected promotion specialists. He has eight promotions and has been central to Ceuta’s rise.
Born in Gerena in 1974, he built his reputation away from the spotlight, turning the local club into one of Andalusia’s most eye-catching teams. The ground now bears his name. He later led Betis Deportivo and Eldense before taking Ceuta.
Ceuta have consolidated under his watch, securing safety this year while staying true to a proactive identity. Romero’s teams seek to dominate, press high and attack regardless of the opponent or venue.
Saturday’s meeting could feature high tempo and intense pressing, with both sides inclined to front-foot football. Romero has praised Castellón as a strong, highly physical team with plenty of talent.
