Karim Benzema was close to sealing a summer return to Olympique Lyonnais, but the move fell through, L’Équipe reports.

The 38-year-old Al-Hilal forward was approached by Lyon’s hierarchy, the club where he came through the ranks. He was enthusiastic about pulling on the red and blue again and was even ready to play without pay.

Despite mutual interest, the deal could not be completed because he had not yet been released from his Al-Hilal contract at that time. He has since secured that release.

His ambassadorial role for the Saudi league, which runs until 2030 and which he wished to honour, also stood in the way of a move to another country.

Benzema remains deeply attached to OL, the club of his life. He is unlikely to end his career there, having helped the Rhône side win four league titles before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.
