Leon Bailey is reportedly on his way to Athens for medicals after Olympiacos reach a permanent-transfer agreement with Aston Villa | OneFootball

The speed of this deal is striking. Only a few hours ago, Leon Bailey was one of several possibilities on Olympiacos’ winger list. Olympiacos had contacted Aston Villa. They had spoken with the player’s camp.

No one could even say with certainty whether the conversation involved a loan or permanent transfer.

Now Fabrizio Romano reports that the clubs have a verbal agreement, the transfer will be permanent, Aston Villa have authorized it to proceed and Bailey is traveling to Greece for his medical. That is no longer a target.

It is a transfer in execution.

Bailey is not simply another winger to give José Luis Mendilibar rotation. At his best, he changes the geometry of an attack. Olympiacos already possess players capable of receiving wide, combining in possession and attacking around a settled defense. Bailey's most dangerous quality is different.

He can turn open field into a scoring situation almost immediately. Win possession. Find Bailey. Attack.

That simplicity matters enormously in Mendilibar’s football. The Spaniard wants opponents punished before they reorganize. His best teams do not necessarily require 15 passes between recovering possession and creating danger. Bailey is built for that environment.

He can receive from the right and attack inside onto his left foot. He can operate from the opposite side and attack space externally. And he brings genuine one-v-one acceleration that can force a defensive line to retreat rather than step forward. That last point has a knock-on effect. A winger who consistently threatens the space behind a defense creates more room for everyone else:

the No.10,

the overlapping fullback,

and midfield runners.

Bailey therefore does not need to score to reshape how opponents defend Olympiacos.

There is another unusual element. Bailey is not merely a famous player Olympiacos have evaluated through recruitment data. Mendilibar has watched him from the opposite technical area. Bailey started against Olympiacos for Aston Villa during the historic 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League semifinal. That gives Olympiacos a level of direct familiarity with the player that most transfer targets do not provide.

The coaching staff know his acceleration. They know his movement. They know where he can damage a defense. They also know the weaknesses. That matters when taking a financial risk on an experienced player.

The medical is going to matter more than usual

The primary concern around Bailey has never been whether he possesses enough talent for the Greek league.

He clearly does. The issue is availability. His recent career has contained significant physical interruptions, and that makes the medical examination more than a procedural box to tick.

For Olympiacos, the key evaluation must be whether Bailey can sustain the repeated high-intensity actions Mendilibar asks from his wide players. Press. Sprint. Recover. Attack again.

That workload can expose recurring muscular problems very quickly. So while Romano's “here we go” places the transfer in its final stage, I would still keep one distinction in place: agreement reached does not equal medical passed.

That is now the final meaningful sporting hurdle.

The permanent structure makes the move even more significant

Earlier reporting left open the possibility of a loan. That would have made sense. Bailey's wages are substantial, Aston Villa wanted to move him and Olympiacos could have gained a high-level winger while limiting long-term risk.

But Romano is reporting a permanent transfer through 2029. That means Olympiacos are apparently willing to commit to Bailey beyond this season. Combined with the record-level Puerta acquisition, it reinforces the impression that Olympiacos are not merely building for domestic dominance.

They are spending to raise the athletic and individual quality of a team expected to compete deep into Europe.

And now the Gelson Martins question becomes unavoidable

This development also changes the interpretation of Krasnodar’s €6m pursuit of Gelson Martins. There is still no new confirmed acceptance of Krasnodar's offer, so I am not upgrading that transfer here. But Bailey's arrival gives Olympiacos far more flexibility. Previously, losing Gelson meant creating another immediate hole on the wing.

If Bailey passes his medical and signs, that problem becomes much smaller. Olympiacos could therefore accept a strong offer for Gelson without entering the market from a position of desperation.

There is also still the possibility of another winger being acquired, particularly because Thiago Nuss remains highly regarded internally. Bailey may therefore be the centerpiece of the winger rebuild rather than necessarily its final piece.
