France’s sports minister Marina Ferrari has written to FFF president Philippe Diallo, urging a fresh review of what might be done to help save Girondins de Bordeaux.
According to L'Équipe, Bordeaux have been relegated to R1 but still hope to compete in N1 after several seasons of severe financial turmoil. The case is highly political and has reached the Élysée in recent weeks.
In her letter sent on Wednesday, Ferrari asked the federation to consider possible avenues for Bordeaux, citing the club’s standing in French football.
The FFF has applied its regulations to the letter throughout and can rely on two favourable rulings, first from the CNOSF conciliator and then from the administrative court. Reflecting the sensitivity of the issue, an executive committee has been convened for Thursday.
Any exception for Bordeaux could trigger legal challenges from several clubs, such as Goal FC, Bobigny and Sedan. Reinstating the Girondins might also disrupt fixtures and require annulling results from the opening matchdays. Those are the stakes in the hours ahead.
