Marseille’s late move has put Lucas Perri’s planned switch to Torino under strain and handed Leeds United a decision.
After James Trafford’s arrival, the 28-year-old was lined up for Serie A. Torino had a verbal agreement with Leeds and Perri for a loan with a £13million option. He had given his word and was awaiting paperwork for a medical this week.
Toro Goal reports that Marseille approached Perri and his camp on Monday 10 August, and are due to hold direct talks with Leeds on Wednesday 12 August. This follows Geronimo Rulli’s move to Manchester City, leaving the French club seeking a new number one.
Unlike Torino’s structure, Marseille could table an upfront permanent deal and offer UEFA Europa League football. They have set their sights on Elland Road for a first-choice goalkeeper.
Perri now faces a crossroads, either keep to his promise to Torino for likely starts in Serie A, or pivot to Marseille for a bigger stage in Ligue 1, where he previously impressed with Lyon.
For Daniel Farke and Leeds, a straightforward loan sign-off has become a bidding contest, with Marseille’s readiness to pay improving the financial picture for Paraag Marathe and colleagues. The coming hours will show whether loyalty or European nights at the Velodrome prevail.
