Marseille’s Derek Cornelius set for three-month absence | OneFootball

Derek Cornelius (28) will be out for around three months, as per a report from L’Équipe, after the defender sustained a hip injury while on international duty with Canada.

Cornelius returned to Marseille over the summer following a loan spell at Rangers last season. The defender has been used sparingly so far, playing just 26 minutes of football in Ligue 1 and a further 67 minutes in the UEFA Europa League. His start against Besiktas in the UEL suggested that he would be used as a rotation option in what is a threadbare OM squad. 

However, his injury constitutes a further blow for Bruno Genesio. As revealed on CANMNT’s official X account, Cornelius sustained a non-contact lower-body injury during Wednesday’s training session in Toronto and was subsequently transported to a local hospital. Jesse Marsch said that he had feared the worst for the centre-back.

Marseille communicated on Cornelius’ injury on Saturday and said that it was “envisaged” that the player would “be unavailable for a significant period of time”, without specifying further.

L’Équipe understands that, whilst Cornelius will not need to undergo surgery, he will not play again in 2027. An absence of around three months is envisaged.
