Derek Cornelius is set to miss around three months with a hip injury sustained on Canada duty, and does not require surgery, L’Équipe reports.

The 28-year-old returned to Marseille in the summer after a loan at Rangers last season. He has been used sparingly, with 26 minutes in Ligue 1 and 67 in the UEFA Europa League. His start against Besiktas hinted at a rotation role in a threadbare OM squad.

The Canada men’s national team said in a post on X that Cornelius suffered a non-contact lower-body injury during Wednesday’s training in Toronto and was transported to a local hospital. Jesse Marsch said he had feared the worst for the centre-back.

Marseille said on Saturday that it was envisaged he would be unavailable for a significant period, without providing further detail.

The injury is a further blow for Bruno Genesio.
