As the 2025 AFCON draws to a close this Sunday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is already looking ahead to the future with the creation of the Africa Nations League, scheduled for 2029. According to AfrikFoot, Morocco and Senegal are among the contenders to host this historic first edition, with Ethiopia and Angola also reportedly in the running.

Patrice Motsepe, president of CAF, confirmed that several nations had expressed their interest in hosting, highlighting the excitement surrounding this new tournament. For now, the chosen format will be zonal. Qualifiers will take place in designated regions, such as West Africa, and the winners from each zone will advance to the finals, which will be hosted by a nation drawn at random.

With 54 participating teams and a schedule aligned with international breaks, the Nations League aims to fill the gap left by AFCON, which will switch to a four-year cycle starting in 2028, drawing inspiration from the European Nations League model.
