Javier Aguirre is due to sign his Valencia contract on Monday in Mexico, taking charge of a team in the relegation places until 30 June. He will become the club’s 67th head coach and the first born in Mexico.

According to AS, lawyers and tax advisers for both parties were finalising details late on Sunday, with no one disputing the agreement’s duration.

Aguirre plans to fly to Spain on Wednesday, which would make Thursday his first day on the training ground and in front of the media.

Until the in-person handover, Óscar Sánchez will continue to lead first-team sessions. Despite Valencia’s B team playing in England against West Ham on Wednesday in the Premier League International Cup, the club has instructed Sánchez to remain with the senior squad.

Aguirre is expected to arrive with at least two trusted Spanish assistants, his deputy Toni Amor and fitness coach Pol Lorente, who has left Mexico’s national team. He and his staff have been analysing the squad and, in calls with Braulio Vázquez, have discussed market needs, chiefly at centre-back, to be explored further once daily work begins.

Sánchez’s short-term legacy across two matches includes Aaron Mayol and Aimar Blázquez. In principle, neither will travel with the reserves to England so they can stay available for the first team during the transition. From Thursday, Aguirre, Amor and Lorente will set a three-week programme, and it is not ruled out that the ‘Vasco’ requests at least one friendly before facing Racing.
