Quique Sánchez Flores marked his Deportivo Alavés debut on Sunday at Mestalla, where Valencia CF came from behind late on. According to Superdeporte, the match carried a survival feel and the new coach lived every minute in evident discomfort.
The finale offered no respite. Alavés were within reach of three points when Sánchez Flores called for Mariano, handing the striker a chance after three months without minutes under former coach Coudet. Mariano squandered a glaring opening, gifting Valencia a route back.
With the score at 1-2 and Valencia leaving spaces as they chased, Alavés broke well. Lucas Boyé released Mariano in a prime position for a third, but a poor first touch meant he did not even get a shot away. From the touchline, Sánchez Flores held his head in his hands.
The turnaround followed, first through an equaliser from Cömert, then via a penalty won and converted by Hugo Duro. On the sideline, the coach cut a resigned figure, perhaps even hinting at regret over decisions made.
Valencia CF now have 32 points, breathing easier above the relegation line set by Mallorca on 25.
