According to Globo.com, refereeing analyst Paulo César de Oliveira said Zé Ricardo should have been sent off for an elbow on João Ananias during Santos v Remo in Saturday’s Copa do Brasil last 16 first leg.

The flashpoint came at 38 minutes as the pair contested a high ball, with Zé Ricardo swinging his right arm.

He caught the Santos defender squarely. João Ananias bled, received treatment on the pitch and changed his shirt.

Santos players protested strongly in the aftermath of the incident.

He described the elbow as a trigger motion with the arm, and said it warranted dismissal.
