CRB had its penalty reduced by the STJD after appealing a fine for homophobic chants aimed at Neymar Jr in the 2025 Copa do Brasil tie against Santos. The case was heard by the tribunal’s 3rd Disciplinary Commission on Thursday 12.
"The appeal seeks only an adjustment to the sanction’s weighting. CRB runs campaigns against all forms of prejudice, which are relevant factors for reducing the penalty. We also cite a precedent, case 182/2025, in which the appeal was upheld to reduce the sanction. The defence asks for the penalty to be reviewed and set at a level consistent with Serie B," said club lawyer Osvaldo Sestário to GE.
The incidents occurred in the second leg of the third phase at Rei Pelé on 22 May. The match finished 0-0, then CRB went through 5-4 on penalties. Last year the same commission imposed a R$ 60,000 fine for the chants and examined a pitch invasion complaint, which was dismissed after the supporter was identified and detained on the pitch.
In his report, referee Ramon Abatti Abel noted that, as the officials left the field after the shootout, a homophobic chant directed at Neymar Jr was heard from home fans.
Neymar gestured towards the CRB end to ramp up the taunting before heading to the dressing room after the warm-up, then later signalled for silence. A late substitute and Santos’ standout, he created chances that almost led to goals and converted the first penalty.
In Maceió, the Santos No 10 was greeted warmly by the club’s fans at the team hotel. Home tickets sold out, and some local supporters set off fireworks in the early hours in an attempt to disturb Santos’ rest.
