Phil Foden, also dropped before the World Cup, must wait for a return after a subdued start with Manchester City. Reece James, Harry Maguire and Morgan Gibbs-White are also left out.

Injuries keep Djed Spence of Inter Milan and Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson sidelined. Noni Madueke, involved in England’s summer run, is omitted after a poor start with the Gunners. Ollie Watkins, now in Saudi Arabia, is also excluded.

Several newcomers benefit. Dominic Calvert-Lewin returns after impressing for surprise package Leeds United, third in the Premier League. Lewis Hall and 19-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly are called up.

Rio Ngumoha, 18, and Alex Scott, 23, who were closely watched in pre-World Cup preparations, are also included. The squad also features Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.
