Sebastiaan Bornauw has announced his Leeds United exit, with a move to Hamburg arranged ahead of what is expected to be a busy week at Elland Road.
According to Leedsunited.news, the defender has completed a loan to Hamburg that includes an obligation between £3.5m and £4m, a year after arriving for £5m. The club are also closing in on an £8.2m deal for Nico Elvedi.
Signed after promotion as cover for Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk, Bornauw had long been a Daniel Farke target, the manager tried to bring him to Norwich City. He made 17 appearances last season, 12 in the Premier League, totalling 771 minutes even after a switch to a back three.
A strong pre-season had some supporters wondering if he could start ahead of Jaka Bijol, then his departure plans emerged. Before either club confirmed the move, he posted a farewell message on Instagram, thanking supporters and recalling nights under the lights at Elland Road.
Willy Gnonto, Anton Stach, Gabi Gudmundsson and Tarik Muharemovic responded on social media with well wishes and heart emojis. Bornauw spent only 12 months in West Yorkshire but was seen as a good fit for the dressing-room culture under Farke.
Bornauw is expected to be the first of four deals this week. Elvedi is set to sign, Joel Piroe has undergone a West Ham medical and Lucas Perri is due to join Serie A side Torino on loan.
