To the shock of teammates, opponents, staff and supporters, VfL Wolfsburg star Christian Eriksen suddenly went down in the second half of Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine on Sunday evening.
The 34-year-old lay unconscious for a moment, but then got back on his feet and walked off the pitch before being taken to hospital for examinations.
The Danish Football Association has since announced that Eriksen is “doing well” under the circumstances – a message that came as a relief to VfL Wolfsburg sporting managing director Dieter Hecking.
“We are relieved that he is doing well under the circumstances and are now awaiting further developments,” Hecking said, according to Kicker.
“Our thoughts are with him and his family; he has our full support,” he continued.
What happens next for Eriksen from a sporting perspective is currently unclear.
Hecking recently stated that the 34-year-old is free to decide how and whether things will continue for him in Wolfsburg following the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga.
“We can talk about everything,” he said.
