Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed Bertrand Traore on a one-year contract to bolster their attack as they aim for a return to the Premier League.

Speaking to the club's website, head coach Cesar Peixoto welcomed the addition and said the wide role was a priority in his system. He highlighted Traore's one-versus-one strength, left foot and speed into space, and noted the winger will need time to regain fitness after working alone and to learn their game idea.

The Burkina Faso international returns to English football after a second spell at Ajax and a stint with Sunderland. The former Chelsea and Aston Villa player brings top-level experience to a Championship squad.

Traore joined Chelsea at 18, developing with Vitesse Arnhem and Ajax, and helped Ajax reach the Europa League final. He then enjoyed a three-year spell at Lyon before Aston Villa paid £17 million in 2020.

He spent four seasons at Villa, making over 62 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

Internationally, he has 91 caps for Burkina Faso and recently captained his country at the Africa Cup of Nations. That pedigree is expected to be valuable in the Wolves dressing room.

Wolves were relegated last season after an eight-year Premier League stay that followed their 2017-18 Championship title. They are ninth with eight points from five matches, winning two, drawing two and losing one.
