Ladislav Krejci has been backed to play a big role for Wolves this season after he failed to secure a move away in the transfer window.

Wolves are expected to keep Ladislav Krejčí until January at least after he failed to secure a move away prior to the English transfer deadline.

The Czechia international captain joined the club from Girona last year on an initial loan that became permanent this summer.

Even though Krejci’s first year at Molineux was forgettable in the sense that the team suffered an embarrassing relegation from the Premier League, the defender was one of few to emerge with any credit.

Therefore, it was widely expected that Krejci would secure a move away, and with the 27-year-old yet to feature for Wolves in the Championship, it still seemed likely going into the final days of the window.

Yet, whilst there was plenty of interest in the player, with West Ham among the admirers, the 11pm deadline passed on Tuesday with Krejci still at Wolves, and he was on the bench for the defeat at the Hammers last time out.

In theory, the former Sparta Prague man could still move on, as the window is still open in countries such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia, but Wolves chief Cesar Peixoto appeared confident that Krejci will be part of his squad until January at least.

It has been a decent start to life at Wolves for the Portuguese coach, with the team picking up seven points from his four games in charge.

But, the one glaring issue has been the defence, as Wanderers have conceded eight goals, with the bottom three only having shipped more.

Toti Gomes, who is left centre-back, has particularly struggled in the opening weeks, and, with Krejci now likely to stay, many fans are calling for him to be put in the XI against Birmingham on Sunday.

When quizzed by FLW about keeping Krejci, Wolves fan pundit Thomas Woodhall echoed that view, as he explained why Peixoto must make the change quickly.

“Krejci would be one of the best centre-backs in the league. He’s left-footed, which is hard to come by in defence, a quality one anyway!

“For me, he walks into the team over Toti Gomes, I don’t even think it’s close. If anything, Toti should’ve been used as a backup for left-back.

“I can’t jump on the bandwagon with the hate for Toti, but I think he has been awful at centre-back this season. I don’t think he’s a captain, and that has impacted his playing ability, which has added more pressure that he can’t handle.

“When you have a ball coming over the top, he has the pace to catch the striker, so, in certain respects, he is the best option in the team, solely his acceleration. But, he has been a bit of a donkey, and I don’t like to say it as he has been with us a long time, and he’s a great character, and seems a nice enough guy.

“But, Krejci, he’s unbelievable, he walks into the team now we’ve kept him. Hopefully he is happy enough to play, and we’re paying his wages so he better be! It was a five or 6 out of ten window, and I’m looking forward to seeing Sean Neave, and Krejci back in the team.”

Wolves must quickly sort their defensive issues

Even though Wolves were very unlucky against West Ham, it’s clear they are not as convincing as they should be defensively - and Krejci would help rectify that.

He is a very good defender, and his ability on the ball would also help Peixoto’s side in the way they build out from the back.

You can understand why Krejci wasn’t involved during the window, but he should now be brought back because Wolves must improve at the back if they are going to win automatic promotion this season.
