Bailey Cadamarteri joined Wrexham from Sheffield Wednesday in January but has yet to make an impact

Sheffield Wednesday's relegation from the EFL Championship was confirmed in the most painful way possible, losing 2-1 away to bitter rivals Sheffield United to confirm their place in League One next season.

The Owls have had a nightmare campaign by almost all metrics, and some fans will be glad that their place in the third tier next year is assured, with some hoping that their side can play with some freedom now.

Their squad has been decimated, both over the summer and in January, leaving manager Henrik Pedersen with few options to pick from on a game-by-game basis.

The loss of Barry Bannan to Millwall in the winter was particularly damning and an indication of just how bad things have gotten at Hillsborough, largely due to the negligence of former owner and Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri.

With Wednesday entering administration and in desperate need of funds, the likes of Bannan were forced to leave to cut wages, alongside Yan Valery, who joined Swiss side Young Boys on loan, and the £1 million sale of a forward who has yet to earn any minutes for his new side.

Jamaican international Bailey Cadamarteri joined Wrexham in January for a fee of around £1 million from Sheffield Wednesday, but since his move, he has seriously struggled for game time.

Included on the bench in his first three games since being made available for selection by the Red Dragons, Cadamarteri has only been able to watch on from the dugout, raising concerns over whether Wrexham was the best choice of club to pick from.

Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick, has provided their thoughts on whether they think that Wrexham was the correct move for Cadamarteri, given his lack of minutes in North Wales thus far.

Patrick said: "Yeah, with the move, I always thought it was a strange destination for him. At the time, Wrexham were in the promotion hunt and in recent weeks, they really do seem to be making a proper bid for the top six.

"So bear in mind as well, the money they have spent, one of the biggest spenders, if not the biggest in the Championship, so it really wasn't somewhere he was going to go and get regular football, because at this stage of his career, he needs to be getting minutes.

"He needs to be competing so he is developing, as he can't be aided by sitting on the bench at Wrexham.

"He doesn't want to be the case where he's going from loan to loan, never really establishing himself. So yeah, there were definitely a host of better clubs he could have gone to in a Championship at the lower end or in League One.

"So it definitely doesn't seem to be a move that's paying off. To be honest, I didn't think it would at the time."

Indeed, Wrexham were not the only club looking to sign Cadamarteri in January, with the likes of Hibernian, Millwall, and Blackburn Rovers all interested in the young forward.

Born in Leeds, Cadamarteri progressed through the ranks at Wednesday all the way to the first team, where his four goals and one assist in the Championship last season for the Owls shot him into prominence.

He had his pick of clubs in the winter, but chose high-flying Wrexham as his next destination, with the Welsh outfit aiming to make it four consecutive back-to-back promotions this season.

Cadamarteri may well prove to have a huge role to play in that in the latter stages of the campaign, but as things stand, he has yet to make an impact at STōK Cae Ras, despite it being early days, something which he, and Red Dragons fans, will hope changes sooner rather than later.
