Marco Silva’s unveiling as Benfica head coach underlined a lifelong connection to the club, and he is progressing towards the 50-year membership milestone that carries the Águia de Ouro.

He arrived with an old membership card and a childhood photograph, a detail that resonated with supporters. Maisfutebol reports that he joined in the early 1980s at the age of four, enrolled by his father and grandfather, with a number close to 10,000.

On the eve of his presentation, Rui Costa highlighted the coach’s emotional bond with Benfica. Silva later acknowledged that sentiment weighed on his decision to return to Portugal to take charge at the Luz.

Silva is nearing 45 consecutive years as a Benfica member, a span that predates both his playing and coaching careers. If he maintains his seniority, he will edge closer to the Águia de Ouro, awarded to those who complete 50 years of affiliation.

After success in Portugal, Greece and England, he now leads the club he has followed since childhood. The emotional thread ran through his unveiling, as Benfica begin a new cycle following José Mourinho’s departure for Real Madrid.
