Marco Silva has begun shaping Benfica’s next season, inheriting a demanding brief after José Mourinho’s departure to Real Madrid and facing little time to settle.
According to Glorioso 1904, one of Silva’s first tasks will be to forge a new competitive identity. Mourinho left a powerful imprint through experience, trophies and leadership, and Silva returns to Portugal after several years in the Premier League needing to install his ideas and win swift trust from the stands.
The calendar tightens the pressure. Pre-season starts on 25 June, giving just under a month to prepare for the Europa League second qualifying round on 23 July. Several internationals could report late to Seixal because of the 2026 World Cup, complicating the build-up.
The market is another major dossier. Nicolás Otamendi’s exit has left a hole in defence and signing at least one centre-back appears inevitable. Silva is also tasked with reviving underperformers Dodi Lukebakio, Franjo Ivanovic and Georgiy Sudakov, a player whose qualities the new coach particularly values.
There is also work to do beyond the pitch. After a disappointing season, Benfica’s support expects a strong response, a renewed connection between team and crowd at the Luz, and smarter use of academy talent. At this club, success is measured by results and by identity.
